Five Benefits Of Hiring a Freelance Writer For Your Business
Okay, let’s get this out of the way - yes, I am a freelance writer. But I haven’t always been. I have done both freelance work and I worked as a writing and editing manager for a small company for over six years.
I can tell you that there are benefits to both (as well as in-house marketing, writing, etc) but since you are here reading this article, I assume it means you are interested in working with a freelancer.
So, here are five benefits of working with a freelance writer for your business:
#1 - You get a highly personalized experience
#2 - Freelancers are often flexible with their pricing
#3 - Freelance writers often have more than one specialized skill
#4 - Freelance writers love writing - even the stuff you might think is boring
#5 - Most freelancers are highly trained and skilled (and willing to prove it)
Continue reading on to learn more about each point above. Or, if you’re interested in learning more, feel free to reach out to me and we can chat more about what it’s like working with a freelance writer.
#1 - Freelancers Offer a Highly Personalized Experienced
One of the main differences you will see if you choose to hire a freelance writer for your business instead of a larger company or organization is the personalization that a freelancer can offer you.
Bigger companies often have 2-3 standard packages that can somewhat flex around your particular needs. However, since larger companies often already have many clients that they work with, there isn’t as much incentive to change their pre-existing packages to work better for you. It would be a lot of work for them, and it’s not always worth it.
Freelancers, on the other hand, usually only take on a certain amount of clients at a time. Freelance writers often work on their own and can’t sustain larger numbers of clients at a time.
Because freelancers are selective about the clients they work with, if they find one they want to work with, they will often create highly customized packages that align perfectly with both the writer’s skills and the client’s goals.
See, I’ve loved writing for as long as I can remember! When you work with a freelancer, you get to know them personally
Not only that, but when you work with a freelance writer, you have the opportunity to quickly and easily get to know them. There is no “middle man” here - what you see is what you get.
You will be able to personally talk with them about your business plans, what ad copy, types of articles, or other marketing content you need. Your writer will be able to share with you their plans personally and have the chance to really get to know you and your business.
Now, keep in mind, that this is just my own personal experience working as both a freelancer and working with a larger agency. Every business is going to conduct itself in a unique way - so if you’re interested in working with anyone, whether it’s a freelancer or an agency, it’s a good idea to simply reach out to them.
Sending a quick email or giving the business a call is the perfect way to see if they are a good fit for you.
#2 - Freelancers Often Offer Flexible Pricing For Businesses
Another great benefit of choosing to work with a freelance writer for your business is that they often offer more flexible pricing. Since freelancers don’t have the same expenses that a larger company will have (such as building costs, benefits pay to staff, etc) they can often charge more affordable prices for small businesses.
Now, keep in mind I am very much pro adequate pay for your work! I believe that both agencies and freelancers should charge a fair fee for their services.
Freelancers can often offer more flexible pricing options
However, freelancers often are able to provide more flexible pricing, especially for small businesses that might only need to hire someone for a few hours of work per week.
Even if the cost would be the same to hire a freelancer as it would for an agency, an agency may not take on small amounts of work or the specific type of work you are looking for.
When it comes to larger agencies, it may not be worth it for them to take on very small clients. Freelance writers, on the other hand, might be passionate about working with small, local businesses and might not care if they are only needed for 1-2 hours per week.
An individual can also be more flexible with how they charge. For example, they may charge an hourly rate or a flat rate, depending on the needs of their clients.
Larger businesses don’t always have flexible pricing options like this, as they need to ensure they know their exact monthly income in order to pay their staff.
#3 - Freelance Writers Often Have More Than One Specialized Skill
When an individual chooses to begin their freelance career, it’s often not without a lot of back and forth first. I’m part of a few freelancing groups online, and let me tell you, a lot of us have done many, many jobs before we landed on freelancing!
Freelance work is scary, especially when you start out. Freelance work is not as consistent as a permanent job, and a lot of freelance writing work overlaps with other types of marketing. Because of this, freelancers often learn many skills before landing on a freelance career.
For example, over the last 10 years, I have had the opportunity to do a lot of different things, such as:
Proofreading and copy editing
Social media ad design & creation
Poster, flyer, and brochure design
Typesetting
Client analytics
And a lot more too! You will likely find that many freelance writers are able to do more than just write. We need to be able to conduct keyword research, perform analytics to ensure our work is working for you, and have at least a general understanding of visual design.
Depending on the needs that your company has, you should choose a freelancer who is able to do everything that you need. If your project is relatively small, it is often easier to work with just one person than a group of workers who don’t know each other.
#4 - Freelance Writers Love Writing
While this may seem obvious, just bear with me! Most businesses looking for writers are specifically looking for someone who can write sales and ad copy as well as create other types of marketing materials.
When you choose to work with a marketing agency, you may be working with a large group of people who love marketing. While having a marketing team is great, it doesn’t mean that your sales copy or SEO articles are going to be great too.
Marketing agencies often offer a wide range of marketing services with SEO and other types of writing thrown in there too. Some do hire professional writers, and that is great. While some companies may focus on other aspects of marketing and see writing as more of a second thought.
Freelance writers are excited to sit down and write - even on topics that you might think sound pretty boring!
The benefit you have when you work with a freelance writer is simply that you are guaranteed to be working with someone who loves writing first and foremost.
In my experience, it doesn’t really matter how good you are at coming up with amazing marketing ideas if you can’t sell them. The writing, along with great visuals, is often what sells something.
For me, I never get bored of writing. I’ve written about topics that many might not find very interesting - chain link fences, wooden decks, custom-made sheds, pharmaceutical products, mould removal, carbon monoxide dangers, health and safety training…and a lot more.
While these topics may not seem super interesting, I have loved researching and writing about each and every one! Working with a passionate writer ensures that you are working with someone who is just as excited about your business as you are.
#5 - Most Freelancers Are Highly Trained & Professional
The world of freelancing is wonderful - and it’s also competitive. Because of that, most freelancers are going to ensure they have adequate training and experience before they embark on their freelancing journey.
Freelancers will be happy to share their portfolios with you. Some have their portfolios easily available on their website, while others may ask that you request to see them.
For freelancers who ask that you request their portfolio, this is often due to client privacy. For example, I ghostwrite for a number of clients and cannot publicly display their work on my site. Many other freelancers offer similar services too.
Freelancers are happy to share their portfolios with you
Many freelancers will have some type of professional writing training through their post-secondary programs or courses they’ve taken. As well, many have worked for an agency or have professionally worked as a writer, editor, or worked a related profession for years before choosing to do freelance work.
If you are interested in working with a freelancer but would like to know more about their experience, don’t hesitate to reach out.
A professional freelancer will never be offended if you ask to see their previous work or portfolio. In fact, professional freelance writers are proud of their writing and completed projects. They will be happy to share their work with you!
